It was created almost two thousand years ago by a volcanic eruption so large it darkened the skies in Europe and China. Lake Taupo is New Zealand’s crowning glory. Clear blue waters, clean fresh air, eye catching volcanic peaks and lush green landscapes that surround the largest freshwater lake in the country.

When at Lake Taupo take a trip to see the evidence of the lakes fiery birth. In the 1950s a large area of land north of Taupo suddenly began to emit steam and get hot. Craters of boiling mud emerged, along with other geothermal phenomena and the ‘craters of the moon’ area was born. Wooden walkways have been constructed to protect visitors from the heat of the soil.

Another visiting point is the Maori carvings at Mine Bay Rock. In the late 1970s master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell had completed his decade long training period with Maori elders. He came to his mother's land at Lake Taupo to mark the occasion with this now, world famous carving. They can only be reached by boat with many tours operating daily.

For the less faint-hearted at Huka Falls you can witness the phenomenon of natural hydro power - 225,000 litres of water per second! They have ‘jet boat’ ride here that’s speed, power and exhilaration all rolled into one.
