The cost of photography paraphernalia and processing is likely to be higher than in your home country. Processing of colour print film in 24 hours is available at several outlets in Port Louis and Curepipe. Digital photography equipment and printing are available in outlets around the main tourist resorts. Printing and downloading of photos onto disk are available at the main internet cafés.

Most Mauritians are quite happy to have their photos taken but you should ask permission first. Permits are not required for photography but you are not allowed to take photographs of the harbour and the airport.

Newspapers in Mauritius enjoy a reputation for lively debate and freedom of expression, with the independent press curbed only by self-censorship. The first newspaper was published in 1773 and there have been more than 600 titles since then, including Le Cernéen, started in 1832 as the first newspaper that did not have to be submitted to the government for approval.

The most popular daily papers are Le Matinal and L’Express which are published in French, with occasional articles and advertisements in English. L’Express also publishes a version in Rodrigues. Mauritius now has an English-language daily newspaper, The Independent Larger hotels often sell English and other foreign newspapers, and provide daily news summaries in several languages.

The Mauritius News is published monthly in the UK for Mauritians living overseas and is also available in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Australia and Canada. A copy is also held in La Librairie Allot in Curepipe. Five thousand copies are produced each month and the cover price is 70p or £15 for an annual subscription in the UK.

The Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) operates six radio stations, which broadcast in English, French, Creole and Hindi. Mauritius’s first private radio station, Radio 1, was officially opened on 11 April 2002. The BBC World Service can be received on kHz1575.

Television broadcasting began in Mauritius in 1964 but was not introduced to Rodrigues until 1987. MBC has embraced digital television and operates a total of 17 television channels with programmes in French, English, Hindi, Creole and Chinese. Most hotels in the mid-range, upmarket and luxury categories have satellite channels, including BBC World and CNN.
