Mauritius - Economy

In many ways Réunion is similar to Hawaii in terms of its economic history, although unlike Réunion, Hawaii had a native population when it was discovered by Westerners. Réunion was first settled by a small group of Europeans, who subsequently brought in large numbers of slaves to work plantations of coffee and spices. Attention was then turned to sugar.

Following the abolition of slavery in 1848, Tamil labourers were recruited. In the late 19th century, Chinese and Muslim (Gujarati) immigrants came. Like Hawaii, Réunion began exporting sugar and fruit, particularly pineapples. Floriculture (notably of anthuriums) was developed, as were fisheries and tourism. Today, the fishing and tourism industries are still growing, not yet having been developed to their full potential.
