The hotel is on a small stretch of beach & all rooms face the sea. Rooms are spacious with modern fixtures & fittings. There are 2 penthouses, one of which has its own pool. The hotel markets itself as a couples’ retreat but there is a duplex suitable for families. Room facilities include AC, TV, minibar, safe & Wi-Fi. There is an à la carte restaurant, bar, pool & a massage room. Guests can use the gym, tennis courts & spa at Casuarina Hotel. $$$$

This old favourite, on one of the island’s best beaches, was completely knocked down & rebuilt in 2009. The new hotel opened in 2010 & the result is astounding. It is a large resort but thankfully the rooms are arranged in crescents, each with a swimming pool in the centre, to ensure an intimate feel. The rooms are exceptionally modern & spacious, especially in the beachfront suites. All accommodation, apart from junior suites, has an outdoor shower. The upstairs beachfront suites have a decent-sized plunge pool, while those downstairs have a tiny pool, more like an outdoor bath. They are also visible from the beach. Free Wi-Fi throughout the resort, including in rooms, is a bonus. There are 6 restaurants offering a variety of cuisine, watersports facilities, a large spa, gym, kids’ & teens’ clubs. The hotel was built with eco-friendly aims; for example, used water is collected & stored under the 6 tennis courts. $$$$

The 2 villas have 3 or 4 bedrooms & private pool, & the 8 duplexes have 2 bedrooms. The accommodation is well equipped, internet access is available & daily maid service is included. There is a pool overlooking the ocean, & a dive centre & deep-sea fishing nearby. $$$

Across the road from the beach, the hotel is a mass of white, thatch cottages, round like toadstools. The rooms are comfortable but not outstanding with AC, TV, minibar & balcony/terrace. The 15 apartments have 2 bedrooms, a living/dining area, kitchenette & bathroom. They sleep up to 2 adults & 4 children (1 room with 2 sets of bunk beds), although 6 may be a bit of a squeeze. Kitchens are well equipped. There is a restaurant, bar, 2 pools, tennis court, kids’ club & many watersports are included. $$$

This is a large, family-friendly hotel, set on a peninsula surrounded by sea on 3 sides. The rooms have sleek, modern décor, AC, TV, minibar, safe & balcony/terrace. There are some interesting ruins in the 7ha of tropical gardens: a lighthouse (now housing the kids’ club), cannons & an old fortress. Extensive facilities, always something going on & very child friendly. The all-inclusive is popular. $$$

A 3-star equivalent, 200m from the beach. Heading towards Pointe aux Piments on the coast road, take the road on the left after the police station. Accommodation is in 3-storey buildings around a pool area. Rooms are equipped with en suite, AC, TV, phone, safe, minibar Wi-Fi & balcony/terrace; there are 12 family rooms. There are 2 restaurants, a bar, a nightclub, 2 pools, watersports & a spa. If you don’t mind not being on the beach, this is a good option. $$$

The rooms are in colourful 2-storey units, they are small & unfussy, but clean (as you’d expect from a 3-star hotel, which is how this property is marketed). The rooms are en suite with AC, TV, phone, minibar & safe but no tea/coffee facilities. There are 3 restaurants, 2 bars, pool, tennis courts, watersports, dive centre & kids’ club. A lively hotel on a lively stretch of beach – the constant whining of speedboats being the inevitable downside. $$$

A small, homely hotel, which is fast earning a very good reputation among independent travellers. Wi-Fi is free & there is a computer at reception for guest use. $$$

The public areas are pleasantly decorated with an African theme. There is a Creole restaurant, a small pool & a very small, basic spa area. $$

Free internet access on the ground floor. The beach is a few metres away but the hotel offers a shuttle service (payable) to Mont Choisy Beach. Good value for money. $$
