WHERE TO EAT For self-caterers there’s the Choisy Royal supermarket, in a colourful building at the southern end of the main road through Mont Choisy (Coastal Road); also Chez Popo at the Pointe aux Piments end of Trou aux Biches.

X Caprice Coastal Rd, Mont Choisy; ( for lunch & dinner daily. Cuisine: Italian. On the way to Trou aux Biches, across the road from the beach. A very pleasant restaurant with indoor & outdoor dining, as well as a lounge area. Good quality homemade pasta, pizza & seafood dishes. $$$

X La Cravache d’Or Coastal Rd, Trou aux Biches; % 265 7021; ( for lunch & dinner Mon–Sat. Cuisine: French, Creole, seafood. On the seafront at the southern end of Trou aux Biches. Upmarket with excellent seafood & exceptional views. Reservation recommended. $$$

X Le Pescatore Coastal Rd, Mont Choisy; % 265 6337; ( for lunch & dinner daily. Cuisine: Creole, European, seafood. A good upmarket option right on the seafront with superb seafood. $$$

X Wakamé Coastal Rd, Pointe aux Canonniers; % 263 9888; wakamerestaurant.com; ( for lunch & dinner Wed–Mon. Cuisine: Asian. A stylish, modern restaurant serving fine Asian cuisine à la carte, including sushi & a range of vegetarian options. Reservation recommended. $$$

X Café de la Paix Coastal Rd, Mont Choisy; % 265 5335; ( 09.00–15.00 & 18.00–22.30 daily. Cuisine: Creole, Chinese, seafood. A great little restaurant between the Casuarina & Mont Choisy hotels,serving good food at reasonable prices. The décor is simple, with tables on a covered terrace or small indoor area. There is a good selection of vegetarian dishes. The shrimps in garlic butter & the sweet & sour chicken are particularly good. They also serve some decent cocktails, including a very good planter’s punch. $$

X Cosi Mont Choisy; % 265 5104; ( for lunch & dinner daily. Cuisine: Creole. Relaxed atmosphere, clean restaurant & outdoor dining. They serve a good prawn & chicken curry. Tasty, reasonably priced food. $$

X Patch ’n’ Parrot Hidden Reef Garden, Coastal Rd, Pointe Aux Canonniers; % 269 0374; ( 10.00–late. Cuisine: European, bar/pub. A large South African-run pub popular with expats & tourists. It can become crowded, especially when big sporting matches are shown on the big screen.

Money and banking There is a branch of MCB and an ATM near the public beach in the centre of Trou aux Biches. The new police station is opposite the bank.

Communications There are payphones at Trou aux Biches public beach. Cyber Punk around 200m inland from the Trou aux Biches Police Station (% 988 3688) offers internet access. There is a post office in the centre of Trou aux Biches.
