Upmarket

A Indian Resort (167 rooms) Le Morne Peninsula; % 401 4200; f 450 4011; e resa.indian[at]apavou-hotels.com; apavou-hotels.com. The hotel lies at the end of the peninsula in a windy spot, making it popular with kitesurfers & windsurfers but not suitable if you want to lounge on the sand. Rooms are equipped with AC, TV, minibar & safe; they are large but unappealing & feel in need of refurbishment. 4 rooms have disabled facilities. Facilities include 3 pools, kids’ & teenagers’ clubs, a fitness centre & spa. Overall the service, decor & cuisine fall short of most upmarket hotels. $$$$

A La Vielle Cheminée Chamarel; % 483 5249; f 483 5250; e caroline[at]laviellecheminee.com; laviellecheminee.com. Delightfully rustic self-catering accommodation on a working farm, which grows pineapples, sugarcane & palm trees. There is a 3-bedroom house & 2 cottages with 1 bedroom each. The 1-bedroom cottages have AC, while the 3-bedroom house has fans. The large house & one of the cottages have a fireplace on the terrace for cool winter evenings; each has a garden area. There are no TVs, no internet, just a wonderful opportunity for total relaxation. The décor is rustic but very nicely done in traditional Creole style. The farm is on a hill with views of the surrounding countryside. Guests can wander the farm on foot or on a guided horseride from the well-run stables. There is a small pool with a little bar on a hill in the middle of the property, a very peaceful spot. This is one of few Mauritian properties which takes recycling seriously & does what it can to limit its impact on the environment. Dbl/sgl from €86/65 RO, breakfast can be provided for €6 pp, dinner for €12 pp. $$

A Les Chalets en Champagne (3 villas) 110 Route Plaine Champagne, Chamarel; % 483 6610; f 483 5410; e varangue[at]intnet.mu; leschaletsenchampagne.com. Also 2 self-catering bungalows available. Breakfast is served near the pool; there are 2 bars but no restaurant, although there are plenty nearby. Wi-Fi available. Not on the beach but near the marina from where catamaran & deep-sea fishing excursions leave. It would be wise to have a car if staying here so you can get to the beach at Flic en Flac & try the local eateries. A great budget option.
