Mauritius - Things To Do

Deep-sea fishing The island’s first deep-sea fishing clubs were set up around the area of Grande Rivière Noire as the deep waters here provide ideal conditions. There is now a good choice of operators based in the southwest of the island. This is where you will find Le Morne Anglers’ Club (morneanglers.com). Scuba diving The southwest and west coasts have excellent diving sites for all levels of experience, including a number of shipwrecks. There is a good choice of diving operators to choose from around Flic en Flac and Le Morne. For more information, see Chapter 3, Activities, pages 89-92.

Kitesurfing Le Morne Peninsula has ideal conditions for kitesurfing and several of the hotels in the area offering kitesurfing for a fee. For more information, see Chapter 3, Activities, page 94.

Golf The 18-hole course at Paradis Hotel is open to non-residents. Many of the hotels on the west coast can also arrange for guests to play at the 18-hole course at the Tamarina Golf Estate and Beach Club on the Médine Sugar Estate. For more information, see Chapter 3, Activities, pages 86–7.

Go-karting/quad biking Available at Kart Loisir at Petite Rivière (% 233 2223;f 233 2225; e kartloisir[at]intnet.mu; ( from 09.00 daily). Go-karting costs from Rs300 per person for ten minutes, quad biking costs from Rs1,380 per person for one hour.

Horseriding Available at La Vieille Cheminée at Chamarel and Le Ranch near Rivière Noire. For more information, see Chapter 4, Activities, pages 87–8.

Parc Aventure (Chamarel; % 234 5385; f 234 5866; e parcaventure[at]intnet.mu; parc-aventure-chamarel.com; ( Thu–Tue; reservation necessary) An elaborate obstacle course through the forest, with rope bridges, climbing nets, etc. The course takes around two hours to complete. Wear long trousers, trainers, gloves and insect repellent. There is a minimum age requirement of six years. Also on offer are mountain biking, hiking, kayaking and canyoning.

SPA TREATMENTS Outside the hotels there are a few small spas in the Flic en Flac area, such as Om Spa (Complex Les Flamboyants, Coastal Rd, Flic en Flac; % 769 2676; ( 09.15–17.30 Tue–Sat, 09.15–13.00 Sun & public holidays), which offers traditional and Ayurvedic massage, plus beauty treatments.
