The islands of the Maldives that are developed exclusively as resorts have some of the most luxurious hotel accommodation and facilities available, surrounded by gorgeous scenery, white sands and the Indian Ocean.
Take, for instance, the Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa, located abroad in the South Ari Atoll - a 30-minute seaplane ride away from the capital, Malé (the Hilton has an exclusive lounge at the seaplane terminal for arriving guests). Imagine two islands linked by a wooden footbridge, surrounded by pristine white sandy beaches and turquoise blue waters and home to a kaleidoscope of marine life. Another example is Filitheyo Island Resort, the only island resort in the unspoiled Faafu Atoll. Some of the private bungalows are built on stilts over the crystal waters of the lagoon along with their own private deck area.
A mix of local and continental cuisine along with exotic buffets and barbecues are the norm. Since fish and coconuts are the only items that do not have to be imported, they find their way on to most menus – spiny-backed lobster is a particular delicacy, along with another favourite: fresh tuna straight from the Ocean.
