This juxtaposition of the ancient, the spiritual, the commercial and the modern is part of Thailand’s unique appeal to the overseas visitor.
Nowhere more is this evident than at the Royal Grand Palace complex in the capital, Bangkok. Opened in 1785 to signify the end of the Burmese invasion of Thailand, the palace is, in fact, an array of buildings, including Wat Mahatat (palace temple) and the Wat Phra Keow (royal chapel) which houses the famous Emerald Buddha sculpted from a single piece of jade, and one of the most revered objects in the Kingdom.
In a city noted for its congestion, chaos and carnality, the Royal Grand Palace is a haven of tranquillity demanding the visitor’s respect and awareness of its significance to the Thai people.
