Antigua Hotel Reviews

Antigua and Barbuda can offer “a beach for every day of the year” say the brochures. True, there are 365 designated beaches around the islands – but along with the beaches, there is a wealth of gloriously carefree, luxury accommodation.

The islands’ appeal is multifaceted, from the watersports, beauty spots and colonial heritage to a picturesque interior that ranges from rainforest almost to mini-desert and the finest hotels are not limited to the allure of a fashionable hub but scattered around the islands. In fact, they are micro-worlds where you can dine and play without ever having to think about stepping outside should you choose, although not to sample the fine island restaurants would be a shame.

Carlisle Bay, for example, is situated on the magnificent undeveloped south coast of Antigua.  Set in a sweeping bay on an idyllic beach with a backdrop of rolling hills and lush tropical rainforest, the hotel/resort is within half an hour’s drive from the airport and the tiny, bustling capital of St Johns.

It has 82 beautiful contemporary luxury suites, each spacious and designed with thoughtful extras. The suites range from “junior” to three-bedroom, all with cool, calm interiors, bespoke furniture, individually controlled air conditioning and ceiling fans. Each has a large day bed on the balcony and terrace and a breathtaking view. As Tatler magazine puts it: “Big, uncluttered, sublimely comfortable rooms.”  Full of “wow” factors, Carlisle Bay includes original art and photography throughout, a private screening room showing movies every night and a comprehensive private library.

And then there is Jumbo Bay – the truly remarkable luxury resort built on a 300-acre private island two miles off the coast of Antigua. This secluded hideaway - accessible only by boat – has gained a worldwide reputation among discerning travellers for world-class service and distinguished amenities.

Dotted within one third of the island are 40 suites and 12 villas, each newly refurbished with casually elegant décor and private pools; seven lavish and fully staffed private estate homes are also available, with private pools and tennis courts and full access to the many amenities: watersports, hiking, biking and a fitness centre. Jumbo Bay is also a naturalist's haven and the island features three superb, white sand beaches.

From the private jet bringing you to Antigua’s airport to the private plunge pool, en suite masseuse, housekeeper and chef to the array of active and leisure pursuits available, Jumbo Bay is an “ultimate experience” holiday location.

Antigua’s sister island, Barbuda - accessed by a 20-minute flight from Antigua – is one of the Caribbean’s ultimate getaways. With its endless beaches and evening sunsets, it is the perfect place for “dropping out” of the world for a while and its luxurious hotels are the finishing touch.

The Beach House is sited on 18 miles of private pink-sand beach. The 21-suite hotel is situated on the southern end of Barbuda and features all the “usual” beach activities, on-site spa and yoga and aerobics classes.

On another Barbuda peninsula lies Coco Point Lodge, secluded on its own 164-acre estate, surrounded by translucent turquoise water on three sides.  A unique all-inclusive resort bordered by miles of pristine white-sand beach, Coco Point deliberately limits itself to a maximum of 68 guests enjoying superb accommodation, natural beauty and seclusion.
