St Lucia weather and climate

St Lucia weather and climate

The Caribbean island state of St Lucia – one of the Windward Islands chain that officially make up the southern islands of the Lesser Antilles – is an odds-on bet for wonderful weather for the holidaymaker and independent traveller alike.

Although still small, St Lucia is hilly – if not quite mountainous – in parts, which tends to increase the rainfall above that of the small, flat islands in the Windwards. It is wetter than Barbados, for example but like, Barbados, St Lucia’s west coast offers similar advantages, being sheltered from the prevailing winds.

There is appreciable rainfall all year, but the heaviest downpours are more likely from July to November. This is the hurricane season and, although the most violent of these tropical storms may only strike a particular island every few years, less severe ones bring a lot of rainfall over a wide area.

December to May is the driest and coolest time, with day temperatures in the 70s and 80s F (23 to 32C) and night temperatures in the 60s and 70s F (15 to 27C). The hottest time of year is June to August when daytime temperatures can reach the 90s F (32-37C). The rainy season is from June through to November, comprising numerous short but incredibly intense – and refreshing - showers.

Hurricane season is generally from June to November and weather patterns are closely monitored. While hurricanes can cause appreciable rainfall over a wide area, the most violent of these tropical storms may only strike a particular island every few years.

So with those north-east trade winds providing breezes all year round and regular warm showers, regardless of the season in St Lucia the result is pleasant, invigorating, weather throughout the year.
