Model ships The model shipbuilding industry started small in the 1960s but has become so successful that there are now several workshops on the island.

The 150 or so different models available include replicas of famous ships such as the Golden Hind, HMS Victory, HMS Bounty, Mayflower, USS Constitution and Cutty Sark. Each is made by hand exactly to scale, using camphor or teak: camphor for the keel, hard bois de natte for the masts, yards and pulley blocks, soft lilac for the helm and capstan. Prices are generally high, ranging from Rs1,000 to over Rs30,000, but it is easy to see why as a large detailed model can take up to 450 hours to make. Model ships can be sent worldwide, or packed for taking in the hold, as checked baggage, on the plane home (a surcharge may apply). Many of the workshops also produce fine furniture.

One of the best-known manufacturers is Historic Marine in Goodlands which has been producing model ships since 1982. The company now makes around 2,000 models per year. Visitors can visit the model ship workshop and buy the finished articles on site.

You will find model ship shops around the island and in some hotels but most are concentrated around Curepipe. Comajora at La Brasserie Road, Forest Side (% 676 5345), has a shop just outside Curepipe. Bobato has a showroom at 53A Sir John Pope Hennessy Street, Curepipe First Fleet Reproductions is at 74–76 Royal Road, Phoenix. On the west coast, there are two model ship shops on the way into Flic en Flac, Pirate Ship Models (% 453 9028) and next door, Superbe Ship Shop. Qetsia Boutique at the Citadel in Port Louis (% 233 2800) also sells model ships.
