If you’ve seen enough of the beach, this may be the restaurant for you, with its sweeping views of the golf course. You may even spot a deer drinking at one of the lakes. Carefully crafted, beautifully presented dishes with a southeast Asian flavour. Set up by a couple of veterans of the Mauritian tourism industry with extensive experience in some of the island’s most prestigious hotels. X Symon’s Tropical Restaurant Coastal Rd, Belle Mare; % 415 1135; ( 11.00–midnight daily. Cuisine: Creole, Chinese, Indian, seafood. An old favourite around these parts. Also does take-away & there’s a lively bar. $$$

X Chez Manuel St Julien Village; % 418 3599; ( for lunch & dinner Mon–Sat. Cuisine: Creole, Chinese. Inland, just off the A7 between Centre de Flacq & Quartier Militaire. A nice escape from the coast. Offers plenty of choice & has a good reputation among locals. $$
