Luxury

This hotel has long been one of the most luxurious on the island & a member of ‘Leading Hotels of the World’. It is set on a pristine, shallow bay, ideal for swimming. There is a range of first-class accommodation, including 98 suites on a private island, linked by a bridge to the mainland. The rooms are luxuriously appointed with all mod cons, including broadband internet, & have superb sea views plus 24hr butler service. There are 3 sumptuous 3-bedroom villas with private pools. There are 3 restaurants, including the excellent Barlen’s on the beach. The kids’ & teenagers’ clubs are outstanding. There is a Givenchy spa & guests enjoy free use of the hotel’s golf course on Ile aux Cerfs. There are regular free boat transfers to Ile aux Cerfs (popular for watersports) & the hotel’s exclusive Ilot Mangénie, a small sand island. As with the main hotel beach, guests who cannot face moving from their sunbeds will be indulged by smiley waiters on hand to deliver food & drink, & polish sunglasses. The hotel states it aims for the highest standards of service in the world, & it has certainly gone a long way towards achieving that. $$$$$

Mid range

A fairly unattractive building but it is on a beautiful stretch of beach. 30 comfortable sea-facing rooms & 30 garden-view bungalow rooms with AC, TV, phone, minibar, safe & balcony/terrace. The bungalows are cheaper & sleep 2 adults & 2 children. Facilities include a restaurant, pool, regular evening entertainment & some free non-motorised watersports. Free Wi-Fi at reception. Priced at the lower end of mid-range. $$$

A Tropical Attitude (62 rooms) La Pelouse, Trou d’Eau Douce; % 480 1300; f 698 422; e resa[at]tropical-hotel.com; letropicalhotel.com. A cosy, friendly hotel with 60 sea-view rooms & 2 garden-view family units. All are pleasantly decorated & equipped with AC, TV, phone, minibar, safe & balcony/terrace. The restaurant, like the rest of the hotel, has wonderful sea views & there is a pool. Non-motorised watersports are free & there is a dive centre nearby. $$$

Budget

The villa was built in 2008 & has 3 bedrooms, each with its own bathroom; it can sleep up to 10 people. It is spacious, modern & equipped with everything you could need – a real home away from home. There is a shared garden, private terrace & pool. Excursions can be arranged. Good value for money, especially for large families or groups. $$

Shoestring

A Chez Tino (3 studios) Coastal Rd, Trou d’Eau Douce; % 480 2769. These basic studios above the restaurant (see below) come with en suite, fan, TV & balcony. 1 room has a kitchenette. AC is available for a supplement. $
