Mauritius - South Hotels

Luxury

A Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita (123 rooms) Beau Champ; % 402 3100; f 402 3120; e reservations.mas[at]fourseasons.com; fourseasons.com. The hotel opened in Oct 2008 as part of a village-style Integrated Resort Scheme (IRS), which includes residential villas & a range of facilities. The hotel emphasises its lush, tropical surrounds rather than being a traditional beach resort, as this area of coast is known for its mangroves & lack of sandy beaches. There are, however, 3 manmade beaches. Hotel accommodation is divided between the resort’s private island & the mainland. Rooms are beautifully decorated & come complete with private garden, plunge pool & outdoor shower. There are 4 restaurants, a main pool, tennis, a spa & kids’ club. One of the hotel’s main draw cards is a stunning 18-hole golf course, designed by Ernie Els (see Chapter 3, Golf, page 86). $$$$$

Budget

A La Case du Pecheur (16 rooms) Anse Bambous; % 634 5643; %/f 634 5708; e jeanfrancois.lazare[at]gmail.com. Rustic accommodation near Pointe du Diable. En-suite rooms in thatched buildings on the water with AC & a small terrace. The coast here is far from the idyllic beaches for which Mauritius is known; instead mangroves grow at the water’s edge & there is no lagoon. This in itself has its attractions: tranquillity & natural beauty. Shellfish are farmed here, some of which are served in the restaurant (see below). There is also a small pool. Nature trails through the mangrove forest start here. $$

A Ti-Vilaz Lodges (7 bungalows) Kestrel Valley, Anse Jonchée; % 634 5011; f 634 5261; e ledomaine[at]intnet.mu; ledomaine.mu. Back-to-nature-style accommodation in this  estate in the mountains above Vieux Grand Port. Simply furnished bungalows with 1 bedroom, a bathroom & a balcony. Le Panoramour Restaurant boasts superb views (see below). Those of a sensitive disposition should avoid the hunting season. (See also What to see in Eastern Mauritius, below). $$
