Mauritius - St Benoit

Originally built almost entirely of wood, St-Benoît was flattened by a fire in the 1950s and then rebuilt in brick and cement. The town itself is not particularly inspiring; most tourists simply pass through en route to the attractions inland.

Rivière des Marsouins runs through the town and bichiques are caught at the mouth of the river. The tourist office and banks (Crédit Agricole and Banque de la Réunion) are found on Rue Georges Pompidou. About 10km southwest of the town on the RN3 (towards La Plaine-des-Palmistes) is the turning to Grand Etang, a lake once considered sacred by slaves, who would conduct rituals on its shores. There are some pleasant walks here and it is a very popular picnic spot, particularly on weekends. On the same road is the pretty village of La Confiance, about 6km from St-Benoît.

GETTING THERE AND AWAY Getting to St-Benoît is not difficult: cars jaunes (buses) run regularly to and from St-Denis (Line G) and there are buses to and from St-Pierre, either along the coast road (Line I) or inland via La Plaine-des-Palmistes (Line H).

TOURIST INFORMATION The tourist office (% 0262 470509; ( 09.00–12.00, 13.00–17.30 Mon–Sat) is at Place de l’Eglise in Ste-Anne. The staff are very helpful and speak some English.
