In an attempt to reduce its dependence on sugar and textiles, in 2001 the government launched an ambitious project to make Mauritius a ‘cyber island’. A few kilometres south of Port Louis, the Ebène Cyber City, the island’s information technology hub, stands on land formerly used for sugar production. It provides an internet data backup centre and servers for web-hosting, e-commerce and financial transactions. It is also being promoted as a bridge between Africa and Asia, acting as a landing point for a high-speed submarine communications cable linking Malaysia with South Africa.

It is early days for this industry in Mauritius and there has been considerable investment in IT education to ensure the population can benefit from the jobs that are created. Mauritius is seen as relatively secure and stable, which encourages companies to take advantage of the cyber city’s facilities.
