Mauritius - Grand Baie

Just within the boundaries of Rivière du Rempart, Grand Baie gapes inland beyond Pointe aux Canonniers, providing a deep and sheltered bay, often as calm as a lake. It is the place for watersports, self-catering accommodation, and a selection of hotels and restaurants that are among both the worst and best in the island. It is the only area blatantly devoted to mass tourism and consequently has earned the affectionate nickname of ‘The Mauritian Côte d’Azur’.

Grand Baie is the safety valve of Mauritius – the place where ordinary tourists, and locals, can go to let off steam without having to pretend to be wealthy jetsetters. Unfortunately, over the years this has resulted in a lowering of the usual excellent standards of the hospitality industry in Mauritius. While Grand Baie has developed, with many bars and restaurants, into a fun place to stay if you like a lively after-beach life, courtesy, warmth and style have been sacrificed to some degree. Petty crime is also a by-product of the development, so visitors are advised to be vigilant.

However, there is plenty to do in Grand Baie. All manner of excursions and watersports can be arranged by one of the many activity operators with offices here, and the bars and restaurants which line the bay make it a great place for an evening out.

At the western end of Grand Baie is a very colourful Tamil temple covered with statues of gods. If you like temples, it is one of the best Tamil examples on the island.

GETTING THERE AND AWAY The bus stop in Grand Baie is on the coastal road, just outside La Jonque Restaurant. Buses operate regularly between here and the Immigration Square bus station in Port Louis, including an express service which departs every hour. Non-express buses also link Grand Baie to the other coastal villages of the north and east, including Pereybère, Cap Malheureux, Mont Choisy and Trou aux Biches.

TOURIST INFORMATION There is no tourist office as such but there are countless travel agencies who arrange excursions and who can give advice. Everyone in Grand Baie is very keen to share their wisdom on hotels, boat trips and tours but remember that they are wise to tourists and that their cousin almost certainly owns the hotel, boat or tour company which they recommend. The warning to be vigilant about purchasing tours from unlicensed operators is more pertinent in Grand Baie than any other part of the island.
