Mauritius - Post And Telephone

POST In 1815, it took 17 weeks for news of Napoleon’s defeat to reach Port Louis. Today the postal service is quick and reliable. Mail to/from Europe takes about a week, and approximately ten days to/from the US.

A useful local service is Express Delivery, which can result in a letter mailed before 09.00 being delivered to an address within a radius of three miles a few hours later the same day. Two forms have to be filled in for this service.

Most towns and villages (and the airport) have a post office. The general post office in Port Louis is a squat Victorian granite-block building in Quay Street on the waterfront. Adjacent to it is the Mauritius Postal Museum.

Interactive kiosks have been installed in many of the island’s post offices. These offer local and international phone calls, internet access, email and printing. Prepaid cards to use the kiosks can be purchased at the counters or you can use a credit card.

Mauritius Post offers a poste restante facility for visitors who need a temporary mailing address for their incoming mail.

Post offices are open 08.15–16.00 Monday–Friday and 08.15–11.45 Saturday.

TELEPHONE The International Direct Dialling code to telephone or fax Mauritius or Rodrigues from overseas is 230, followed by a seven-digit number. To call Rodrigues from Mauritius, the code 095 should be used in front of the seven digits.

The telephone system is run by Mauritius Telecom, whose corporate office is at Telecom Tower, Edith Cavell Street, Port Louis (% 203 7000

IDD phones are nationwide; just dial 020 followed by the country code, area code and local number. An IDD call to the UK, Australia, France, the USA, South Africa, Italy and Germany from Mauritius costs about Rs15 per minute. Hotels, of course, add their own, often considerable, mark-up to the basic cost.

In recent years, a number of companies have launched prepaid phonecards. These offer very attractive call rates to major destinations and can be used from any phone. For example, using Mauritius Telecom’s Sezam Global Prepaid to call the UK, USA, France or South Africa costs Rs5.70 for the first minute and Rs0.095 per second thereafter; for Australia it is Rs5 and R0.0833. Cards are available in Rs75, Rs150 and Rs250 denominations.

Payphones using coins or prepaid phonecards are available throughout Mauritius but are not always in working order. Phonecards are sold in the busier places but do not expect them everywhere. If you have a mobile phone, you should be able to use it in Mauritius as coverage is very good in most areas. You will need to inform your service provider prior to travel. However, coverage is not as good in Rodrigues. The principal mobile network providers are Cellplus (code CELLPLUS-MRU or CELL+) and Emtel (code Emtel or MRU10).

Mauritius Telecom customer service centres can send faxes and have payphones. They are to be found in many towns, including Mahébourg, Rivière du Rempart, Rose Hill, Terre Rouge, Triolet, Vacoas and in Port Mathurin, Rodrigues.

FAX Faxes can be sent through the Mauritius Telecom customer service centres at much less mark-up than that charged by hotels. See above for locations.
