MONEY

The legal unit of currency is the Mauritian rupee (Rs), which is divided into 100 cents. There are banks with automatic teller machines (ATMs) in most towns around the island, including several in Grand Baie and Flic en Flac. Banking hours are generally 09.00–15.00 Monday–Friday; some are open on Saturday mornings. Banks are closed on Sundays and public holidays. Foreign-exchange counters in tourist areas often have longer opening hours.

The Bank of Mauritius, the Central Bank oversees the proper functioning of the banking system and implements the financial and monetary policies of the government. It used to administer exchange control but since 1983 the rupee has been linked to a basket of currencies relevant to foreign trade. The exchange rate fluctuates daily and is determined by the Central Bank.

You can change foreign currency at banks and exchange bureaux; you will usually need to have your passport with you. Some mid-range and all upmarket and luxury hotels offer foreign-exchange services, where guests can change travellers’ cheques and cash, although the commission may be higher than at banks.

Credit cards, such as Visa and MasterCard, are widely accepted in Mauritius. Most upmarket and luxury hotels will also accept American Express.

Currency exchange rates in April 2012 were as follows: £1=Rs46; US$1=Rs29; €=Rs38.
