Mauritius - Taxis

TAXIS One thing Mauritius is not short of is taxi drivers. Wherever you go, taxi drivers will shout out to you and do their best to persuade you that you need their services. Although most taxis now sport nifty modern meters, they are rarely used. It is as well to negotiate a fare before you start your journey but be prepared to bargain. A taxi ride from Port Louis to Flic en Flac should cost around Rs350.

Most taxi drivers will be only too happy for you to rent their taxi for several hours or a whole day and will act as a de facto tour guide. You can expect a day tour of the island in a taxi to cost around Rs2,000. Bear in mind that taxi drivers are paid a commission by certain shops and attractions to take tourists there, so if you have a fair idea where you want to go you may have to be fairly insistent to ensure you don’t spend too much time deviating to the taxi driver’s preferred haunts.

Most hotels have a taxi stand and display the fares agreed with the drivers at reception. However, if you take a taxi from a stand not linked to a hotel and negotiate a price, you will often find it is even cheaper than hotel taxi prices.

In most towns taxis are to be found close to the bus station but tend to be available only at conventional times (06.00–20.00). They can also be telephoned (there are two dozen companies listed in the phone directory) and there are 24-hour and night services. Many drivers have mobile phones with numbers also listed in the directory. There are a number of private cars operating as illegal taxis (taxi marron).

Taxi trains tout for custom among passengers queuing for buses or follow regular routes, picking up passengers on the way and charging little more than the bus fare for a seat in a shared car. These taxis are usually old boneshakers but they do offer a cheap alternative and will operate late into the night on popular routes.
