Mauritius - Airlines

Air Mauritius: the nation’s airline When Air Mauritius began in 1967, it was an airline without an aircraft. It has remained small ever since although it is known in international aviation circles for doing big things. In 1987, it became the first airline in the world to order higher gross weight 767/200 Extended Range jetliners from Boeing which entered service in 1988. This philosophy continued with the introduction in 1994 of Airbus A340-300 aircraft to replace the airline’s ageing Boeing 747SPs. This aircraft carries around 300 passengers in two classes (economy and business).

In 2012, the fleet consisted of four Airbus A340-300s, two Airbus A340-300Es, two Airbus A319-100s, two Airbus A330-200s, two ATR 72-500s (used on the Réunion and Rodrigues routes) and three Bell 206 Jet Ranger helicopters (available for charter).

By 2012, Air Mauritius was serving 25 destinations on four continents. The airline also acts as the ground handling agent for all other airlines at the international airport.

I have heard few negative reports from passengers flying with Air Mauritius. As a rule, the cabin crew are professional and friendly. As airline food goes, the quality is good in all classes, but don’t forget to make the airline aware of any special dietary requirements at the time of booking. The Airbuses have a satisfactory seat pitch of 81cm (32in) in economy class, personal video screens and in-seat telephones in all classes, whilst business-class passengers enjoy ‘lie-flat seats’ with a 180cm (60in) pitch. Air Mauritius no longer offers a first-class category. All flights are non-smoking.

You are allowed 23kg (50.6lb) of checked baggage in economy class, but only 15kg (33lb) on flights to/from Rodrigues. The business-class allowance is 30kg (66lb). A small extra allowance is provided for sports equipment. If you are carrying a wedding dress, you can ask that it be stored in the business-class coat compartments, otherwise it can be stowed in the overhead lockers or boxed and checked in as hold baggage.

The airline’s head office is located in President John F Kennedy Street in Port Louis and has an efficient ticketing office on the ground floor. Tickets can also be purchased via the company’s website and call centre

If you do choose to fly Air Mauritius, the in-flight magazine, Islander, is worth a read as it frequently contains worthwhile articles on culture, activities, tourist attractions, shopping, etc.
