Mauritius - Buses

BUSES Mauritius is blessed with a decent bus service, a boon to the independent traveller. It is run on a co-operative basis by different operators: the National Transport Corporation (NTC) (% 427 5000; ntc.intnet.mu); Rose Hill Transport (RHT) (% 464 1221); United Bus Service (UBS) (% 212 2026); Triolet Bus Service (TBS) (% 261 6516); Mauritius Bus Transport (MTB) (% 245 2539); and individual operators. Since so many people live outside the towns where they work, they depend on the bus service for transportation and their patronage keeps it flourishing.

Compared with the bus services of Africa and Asia it is a disciplined, well-run operation, although the buses can be pretty ancient and many of the bus drivers seem to think the size of their vehicle is enough to intimidate other road users to get out of their way. Catching the bus can be a fun experience – for a start, the buses usually proudly sport amusing names painted on their sides.

Express buses are not non-stop but take a shorter route between points and stop less frequently, although they charge the same fare as the slower buses. The fares are low, with a trip across the island from Port Louis to Mahébourg (which involves a change) costing Rs120 or so, and from Port Louis to Flic en Flac around Rs20. It is important when getting on a bus to ask the conductor where it is going since the town on the front is not necessarily its destination. You can buy your ticket from a conductor on the bus. As the usual flow of passenger traffic is to Port Louis in the morning and out of Port Louis in the evening, making a connection in country districts sometimes takes ages.

Buses operate from 05.30 to 20.00 in urban areas and from 06.30 to 18.30 in rural areas. There is a late-night service until 23.00 between Port Louis and Curepipe via Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes and Vacoas. During the day, services tend to operate as the bus fills up, rather than to a strict timetable.

There are no published timetables so your best source of information is the National Transport Authority (% 202 2800) or the bus companies themselves.
