GETTING MARRIED

In keeping with the romantic ambience of Mauritius, the island has become a popular place for visitors to get married – not to Mauritians, but to each other. Wedding packages feature in the brochures of most overseas tour operators, whose local representatives handle the arrangements.

Most wedding packages mean that many of the administrative formalities are carried out for you. The tour operator will usually arrange a special licence to allow you to be married from three working days after your arrival in Mauritius. You will need to visit the Civil Status Office in Port Louis before your wedding day to obtain special dispensation under Mauritian law. Divorced ladies must allow a minimum 300-day gap between the divorce and new wedding date, or a pregnancy test taken locally must be negative.

It is possible to arrange a wedding independently but allow plenty of time to gather the required paperwork. If your hotel is not organising your wedding, local ground handlers can assist. You will need to take to Mauritius originals of all documents plus copies certified by a solicitor. For any documents not in English, you will need a certified translation. Vital is a certificate issued under the authority of the prime minister to the effect that the couple are not citizens or residents of Mauritius. This is obtainable on application (at least ten days before the date of the proposed wedding) to the Registrar of Civil Status (7th Level, Emmanuel Anquetil Bldg, Port Louis; % 201 1727; f 211 2420; e civstat[at]mail.gov.au). The documents needed for the application are two photocopies of each birth certificate and two photocopies of the pages showing the issuing authority and personal details of each passport, and any other documents in case of proving divorce, or demise of former spouse. This certificate has to be produced to the Civil Status Officer at the time of publication, and the marriage can take place the following day.

A couple can choose to be married at the Civil Status Office, on a beach or in their hotel, in which case the ceremony is performed by the Civil Status Officer of the locality where the couple are staying. There are more unusual options too, like Ile des Deux Cocos, a small island off the coast, or on board a catamaran or even the Blue Safari submarine off the north coast.

Religious weddings are also possible but you will need to be on the island at least 15 days before the wedding takes place. For Roman Catholic weddings, you need to contact the Episcopate of Port Louis (% 208 3068). Information should also be obtained from the diocese in which you normally reside.

If you are carrying a wedding dress, you can ask the airline to store it in the business-class coat compartments, otherwise it can be stowed in the overhead lockers or boxed and marked as fragile and checked in as hold baggage.
