Mauritius - Getting There

BY BUS The Immigration Square bus station is at the end of Pasteur Street, still known by city denizens as Hospital Street, because of the hospital that was in the square. It is difficult to know which bus queue to join since there are limited signs and no enquiry office, but other passengers are helpful. Buses from here serve the north of the island and include an express service to Grand Baie.

The Victoria Square bus station is off Dumas Street. Buses leave throughout the day bound for central towns, such as Curepipe, from where you can get buses to the south (including the airport) and west. The long, dilapidated, two-storey building used to be the main railway station and offices.

BY CAR Apart from the traffic jams, it’s easy to get to Port Louis by car as the motorway goes right through the city. Parking zones exist in Port Louis, for which you have to purchase tickets in advance from a petrol station if you intend to park on the street. The most convenient car park for the centre, market and waterfront is The Granary, on the harbour side of the highway. The Granary allows you to buy a ticket on the spot and avoid the hassle of the parking zone system. In 2011, the rates were Rs25 for the first two hours, and Rs25 for every additional hour or part thereof. The Granary is a short walk from the Astrolabe Centre and Port Louis Waterfront (the esplanade), and from there a pedestrian subway leads to the city. You can also park at the Caudan Waterfront, near the Blue Penny Museum.

BY TAXI Taxis are more expensive in Port Louis than elsewhere and the attitude of the drivers is predatory. Be sure to negotiate a reasonable fare. There is a taxi stand at Place S Bissoondoyal (Place d’Armes) and one at the Victoria Square bus station.
