Mauritius - History

The city was first settled by the Dutch but was named Port Louis in 1722 by French settlers. The name was chosen either to honour the then young King Louis XV (1715–74) or to link the settlement with Port Louis in Brittany from which, at that time, French seamen sailed for India. When Mahé de Labourdonnais arrived here in 1735, dense vegetation covered the area, except for land cleared between where the theatre now stands and the Chien de Plomb at the bayside, which was the ships’ watering point.

There were 60 mud huts thatched with palm leaf in this clearing, the homes of the French East India Company staff. Soldiers lived in makeshift shelters of straw. The stream running down from Pouce Mountain formed a swampy gully dividing the plain in two. The right side, as viewed from the sea, became the residential area while the left was given over to commerce.

A statue of Mahé de Labourdonnais, erected in 1859, stands overlooking the harbour he created. Nearby, a stone set into the patch of lawn at the foot of the palm trees commemorates the 250th anniversary of his founding of Port Louis.
