Mauritius - Architecture

European settlers brought with them European styles of architecture, which can now be seen side by side with traditional Creole buildings. In some cases, the two styles are blended in the one building. Both Mauritian and Réunionnais Creole architecture utilise the lambrequin, a carved wooden or metal fringe adorning the roof.

Thanks to energetic conservation efforts on the part of the French Government, Creole architecture tends to be better preserved in Réunion than it is in Mauritius. Particular efforts have been made to restore and maintain Réunion’s many delightful ’ti cases, the humble dwellings of ordinary Creole families. These are typically small, single-storey, wooden homes painted in bright colours, featuring shuttered windows, a corrugated-iron roof and decorative lambrequin. The best examples of these are found in Hell-Bourg, Entre-Deux, Cilaos and Rivière St-Louis.
