Mauritius - Arts And Entertainment

Local tourist offices should be able to tell you what’s going on while you’re in Réunion. I also recommend obtaining a copy of L’Attitude, a glossy lifestyle magazine published bi-monthly and sold in newsagents. It has sections on music, theatre, restaurants, exhibitions and sport, as well as a regular slot on tourism, reviewing worthwhile excursions and activities. Also useful is the free monthly publication Pages Noires, which is widely available in bars. It is devoted to nightlife and has details of the coming month’s concerts, as well as what the bars and nightclubs will be offering. Kwélafé is a similar publication, which covers live music, shows, cinema, exhibitions, etc.

THEATRE AND DANCE The arts in Réunion have benefited greatly from financial grants from France. Cultural events happen throughout the year – plays, music, dance, and even stand-up comedy. Several theatre troupes are well established on the island: Théatre Vollard, Théatre Talipot and Compagnie Act 3 are the best known. Théatre Talipot has participated in the Edinburgh Festival and in South Africa’s Grahamstown Arts Festival.

To find out who is performing when you’re in Réunion, contact the ODC (local cultural office) (% 0262 419300; odcreunion.com). There are numerous theatres, including the open-air theatre in St-Gilles-les-Bains, a wonderful setting. Most publish a programme for the coming season, which you can get hold of at the tourist offices.

ART GALLERIES The best of Réunion’s many galleries is the Musée Léon Dierx, at 28 Rue de Paris in St-Denis (% 0262 202482). The focus of the permanent exhibition is modern and contemporary art, including works by the likes of Gauguin, Picasso, Bernard, Maufra, Erro and Chen Zen. At 26 Rue de Paris is Artothèque du Département, which is also worth a visit.

There are numerous commercial art galleries selling art, particularly in St-Denis, such as Galerie Cadre Noir at 11 Rue de Paris in St-Denis (% 0262 214488).
