Mauritius - Climate

The island lies in the path of moist tropical weather pattern circulations, rainfall being highest in the eastern region. In fact, a world record for rainfall of over 12m in a year was claimed in the 1980s for Takamaka, a gorge in Réunion’s interior uplands.

Waterfalls are numerous and a prominent feature of the scenery, especially in the many steep ravines. In the amphitheatre of Salazie, for example, there are around 100 waterfalls, plunging like silvery ribbons down sheer, green cliffs.

The weather along the coast is pleasant almost all year round, although in winter the southeasterly trade winds can make the south coast unbearably blustery. Summer, which is hot and humid, is from November to April with rains peaking from January to March. Cyclones may strike between January and March, as they may in the whole of the western Indian Ocean region. (For more information on cyclones in the Mascarenes. Winter (May to October) is cooler and drier. Winter temperatures, aside from being very low in the mountains, also drop along the windward east coast.

During winter nights, frost and ice occur in the high mountains as temperatures fall to freezing point. In the interior, winter days start at around 4°C, rising to about 15°C by midday, whilst summer days are fairly warm, 15°C in the morning and up to 25°C by midday. Temperatures along the west coast average around 21°C in winter to 31–35°C in summer. Skies along the west coast are usually clear and sunny, whereas a blanket of mist and clouds invariably descends over the rest of the island in the mid-afternoon. The numerous microclimates mean that when there is rain on the coast it can be completely clear in the interior uplands, and vice versa.
