St-Denis, St-Gilles-les-Bains and St-Pierre are the three towns where people head for a night out. St-Pierre wins hands down as far as I’m concerned – it is the only town with lots of bars and clubs that still offer a genuine local, tropical flavour. If French Riviera is more your style, then St-Gilles-les-Bains has exactly what you want. The numerous nightclubs there cater almost exclusively for French holidaymakers. St-Denis has a real mixture and you’re likely to bump into English-speaking students from the university. Wherever you go out, prepare to dance to an eclectic mixture of musical styles, likely to include séga, zouk, reggae and maloya, as well as French, British and American chart music. Casinos are popular with locals and are found in St-Denis, St-Gilles-les-Bains and St-Pierre. Going out in Réunion is not cheap. Entry to nightclubs is expensive, typically around €2, and drinks are costly too.
