What to see in Cirque de Salazie

Maison Folio (20 Rue Amiral Lacaze, Hell-Bourg; %/f 0262 478098; e m.folio[at] wanadoo.fr; ( 09.00–11.30 & 14.00–17.00 daily; admission adult/child under 10 €5/free) A much-photographed Creole home which has preserved the elegant style of the 19th century. Built in 1870 and renovated in the late 1970s, the house, garden and furniture all accurately reproduce the era. Note that the kitchen and dining room are in a separate building at the back, which was the norm in Creole homes. In the garden, ornamental, medicinal and edible plants are typically bunched together in each flower bed. The stories told by the present owners provide an interesting insight.

Creole houses (Cases Créoles) (Guided tours are arranged via the tourist office; % 0262 478989 & operate 11.00, 15.30 Tue & on reservation; tour €8) A leaflet on Hell-Bourg’s Creole houses and the route you can follow to see them is available at the tourist office and costs €5. Alternatively, you can join a guided walking tour of Hell-Bourg, with a local guide providing information on the architecture, history and residents of the village’s Creole homes. At this stage, the leaflet and the guided tour are available only in French.
