Mauritius - Visas And Immigration

Entry requirements The entry requirements for Réunion are the same as those for France. Holders of European Union passports do not need a visa for a stay of up to three months but do need to carry a valid passport or identity card. Other nationalities require a visa. The French Embassy or Consulate in your home country will be able to provide up-to-date information and handle visa applications. All visitors must be in possession of a return ticket.

Staying on Those who do not need a tourist visa but who wish to stay longer than three months should apply for a carte de séjour (residence permit). French bureaucracy makes this far harder than it should be and applications are usually only accepted if you have been offered a job on the island or cannot leave for medical reasons. You will need to go to the Préfecture in St-Denis armed with copious documents, including certified translations of your birth certificate, a letter from your potential employer, passport photos, etc. The requirements change regularly so it is best to check with the Service d’Etat Civile et des Etrangers at the Préfecture (% 0262 407777; reunion.pref.gouv.fr; ( 08.00–13.00 Mon–Fri).

Immigration There are two channels – one for European Union passport holders and one for all other nationalities. Staff are generally efficient.

Plants and animals The importation of plant material, dairy and meat products is prohibited.. For enquiries, contact the Direction des Services Vétérinaires (% 0262 486132); they also handle requests for the importation of pets. Cats and dogs must be microchipped, have a valid anti-rabies certificate and health certificate. Other requirements vary depending on the country of origin.
