On weeknights Port Mathurin is transformed into what resembles a ghost town by about 20.30.

There is regular live entertainment (traditional music and dance) at most of the mid-range hotels. The séga nights at Mourouk Ebony on Wednesday and Saturday are a highlight of a visit to the island.

Safari Bar (% 832 1168; ( 16.00–22.00 Tue–Thu, 21.30–late Fri & Sat) just east of Port Mathurin is at the heart of the island’s nightlife. During the week it is a pub, where people play pool, sing karaoke and catch up with friends. On the weekend the dance floor is the centre of the action. Waves nightclub, not far from the airport at Cascade Jean-Louis, is also popular with locals.
