The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF) has been doing marvellous work in Rodrigues, with help from the Rodrigues Regional Assembly. A nursery has been established at Solitude, where all the native Rodriguan plant species are being propagated.

Even the local pandanus, which are endemic and which appear plentiful, are threatened because of extensive rat damage. Like many of the threatened plant species, it has been used for centuries by Rodriguans in their daily lives. Whilst many of the plants have a medicinal purpose, the leaves of the pandanus are used for weaving. The MWF has undertaken community projects to boost the numbers of such plants, with the help of villagers who take responsibility for the young plants. In the long term, both the plants and the villagers will benefit.

Very noticeable in the remaining Rodriguan woods is the high proportion (97%) of exotic vegetation. In particular, eucalyptus, sisal and lantana have taken over large tracts of land. However, the MWF is hard at work, weeding out the alien vegetation and replanting saplings of other fast-growing native trees.

Visiting a nursery like the one at Solitude or the nature reserves is certainly encouraging, and well worth the effort if you want to see the endemic and indigenous flora up close. When seeing the extent of the reforestation programmes and the commitment of the MWF staff and volunteers, one can’t help but feel positive about the future of Rodriguan flora and fauna.
