Mauritius - Things To Do

MARKET Mahébourg market is on Mondays. It’s near the bus station, between Rue de la Colonie and Rue de Labourdonnais. There are stalls selling fresh fruit and vegetables, household goods, clothing and handicrafts.

Ile aux Deux Cocos This small sand island off the coast at Blue Bay is run by Lux Island Resorts but is open to residents and non-residents of the company’s hotels. A very pleasant day can be spent on the island, lounging on the sand, snorkelling in the bay, taking a glass-bottom boat trip and indulging at the restaurant and bar. If it weren’t for the fabulously attentive service, excellent food and luxurious lounge chairs, it would feel as if you were on a desert island. There is a Moroccan-style villa on Ile aux Deux Cocos, built in 1920 for the then British governor, who used it for lavish parties. Most visitors opt for a day excursion to the island but you can rent the two-bedroom villa overnight and have the whole island to yourself. It is also a popular spot for weddings. Thankfully there is a limit to the number of people allowed on the island at any one time, so it doesn’t tend to feel crowded. Visits to Ile aux Deux Cocos can be booked at Lux Island hotels or through tour operators. A full day (10.00–16.00) on an all-inclusive basis (including boat transfer) costs around €120 per person.
