WHERE TO EAT There are a dozen or more snack vendors around the bus station in Mahébourg and in front of the nearby vegetable market.

X La Belle Kréole Coastal Rd, Pointe d’Esny; % 631 5017; ( 10.00–15.00 & 18.00–22.30 daily. Cuisine: Creole. A wonderful restaurant on the banks of the La Chaux River. The thatched roof & rustic décor using local antiques complement the authentic Creole cuisine, which is cooked the old-fashioned way – on a wood fire. Try a tasty wild boar dish & some of the rather unusual rums, such as chilli or onion flavour. There is a band every evening & a séga show on Fri/Sat evenings. Reservation recommended. $$$

A table d’hôte restaurant in a refurbished colonial house set in pleasant, peaceful gardens between the SSR International Airport & Mahébourg. Reservation recommended. $$$

Near the junction with Rue Suffren, opposite the promenade, with views of the bay. The menu is extensive & varied. Game is a speciality. As well as venison & wild boar in numerous guises (from curry to roast), there is a good selection of pasta, Creole & French dishes. It is also a piano bar & attracts a lively crowd on Sat evenings. $$$
