Mauritius - St Joseph

The area around St-Joseph is known for its production of turmeric, an important ingredient in cari, and for the weaving of pandanus fronds to produce baskets, hats and bags.

Between St-Philippe and St-Joseph is the village of Vincendo. There is usually a black-sand beach at La Marine de Vincendo, although its presence depends on the tide.

Further west on the RN2, before you reach St-Joseph, is the turning to Rivière Langevin. This is a magical spot. The drive takes you through the village of Langevin, with its colourful Creole houses facing the river. Female residents can often be seen doing their washing on the rocks, whilst the men play dominoes in little huts on the riverbank. The road is lined with picnic tables and there are several restaurants serving Creole food.

You pass a hydro-electric station, then small banana and pineapple plantations. On the left is an adorable little chapel built around a cave, with a shrine to Saint Expédit, typically painted red.

It is a picture-perfect river shrouded by trees, with water bubbling around boulders, pausing in pools and then setting off again towards the sea. You can park and walk a short distance to Le Trou Noir, a pool beneath a waterfall, ideal for a refreshing dip. Further along the road, after a steep and winding climb, you can get a close-up view of some more beautiful falls, La Cascade de Grand-Galet. The road ends in the pretty village of Grand-Galet, above the falls.

St-Joseph is an attractive little town astride the Rivière des Remparts. However, it doesn’t hold much interest for tourists, other than being an occasional stopover point for people heading eastwards. The banks, a post office, numerous restaurants, a pharmacy and a medical centre are on Rue Raphael Babet. To the east of St-Joseph is Manapany-les-Bains, a seaside village with a protected natural swimming pool and a beach.
