Mauritius - Nightlife

with Dominique Vendôme and Richard Thesée

From my point of view, St-Pierre’s nightlife is by far the best on the island. It has an abundance of bars and nightclubs open until the early hours of the morning, but perhaps the best thing about going out in St-Pierre is that it retains its Réunionnais feel and has not been transformed into a mini St-Tropez or Ibiza, as is the case in St-Gilles-les-Bains and parts of St-Denis.

There is a string of bars along Boulevard Hubert Delisle, most of which have live music several times a week. Les Pages Noires, stocked by most bars, will tell you which and when.

L’Endroit (% 0262 252696; ( Mon–Sat), next to the casino, has a very clean, European feel. There is a big television screen where they show sports matches and there is live music on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. The dress code here is stricter than in most bars around town and you won’t be allowed in wearing flip-flops, shorts or sleeveless tops. Alizé Plage (% 0262 352221; ( 18.00–02.00 daily), on the main beach, has a relaxed open-air bar with regular live bands. Le Café de la Gare (17 Bd Hubert Delisle; % 0262 252809) draws a crowd day and night; it also has a nightclub (see below). For karaoke divas, there’s Cherwaine’s at 6 Rue Auguste Babet (% 0262 356949), which also advertises itself as being ‘gay friendly’.

Nightclubs don’t really get going until after about 23.30 and are open until the early hours, usually Friday and Saturday and on the eve of public holidays. Some open from Wednesday to Saturday. Expect to pay in the region of €12 for entry, which usually includes one drink. The favourite club of the moment is Africa Queen (m 0692 383806) in the old Café de la Gare at 17 Boulevard Hubert Delisle, opposite Rue François de Mahy. It plays a good mix of European chart music and local séga, maloya and zouk. Le Zaza Club at 16 Rue Méziaire Guignare (% 0262 964061), also plays a good mixture of European and local music but it can get pretty packed.

Also out of the town centre are Le Chapiteau (% 0262 310081) at Montvert-les-Bas and Apollo Night (% 0262 495891; ( Sat night & Sun afternoon) in Ravine des Cabris.

The very popular Casino du Sud is at 47 Boulevard Hubert Delisle (% 0262 252696; ( until 02.00 Sun–Thu, until 03.00 Fri/Sat; slot machines ( from 10.00 daily; tables ( from 21.15 Mon–Sat, from 16.00 Sun), next to the Sterne Beach Hotel.
