Mauritius - Welfare

MAURITIAN WILDLIFE FOUNDATION (MWF) The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation conserves Mauritius’s remaining plants and animals.

How you can help

•              Book an excursion to Ile aux Aigrettes, which contains the last remnants of native coastal forest and is the probable site of the dodo’s extinction. Excursions are offered in most Mauritius hotels and a portion of the tour fees supports wildlife conservation.

•              Donations are vital to the continuation of the MWF’s work. You can donate via the MWF website, or contact the MWF directly (The Fundraising Manager, Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, Grannum Rd, Vacoas; % 697 6097; f 697 6512; e lraffray[at]mauritian-wildlife.org; mauritian-wildlife.org).

•              The MWF is staffed by Mauritians and expatriates, as well as overseas volunteers. To apply for a volunteer placement with the MWF, please consult the website and contact the Conservation Manager (e executive[at]mauritian-wildlife.org).

SHOALS RODRIGUES Shoals Rodrigues is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that studies and monitors the marine ecology of Rodrigues and, through various programmes, promotes marine environmental awareness amongst Rodriguans of all ages thus working towards a sustainable development of the lagoon.

The organisation accepts volunteers from around the world on placements. If this interests you, or you would like to make a donation to the organisation, please contact Jovani Raffin at Shoals Rodrigues, Pointe Monier, Rodrigues (% 831 1225; e admin[at]shoalsrodrigues.intnet.mu; shoals-rodrigues.net).

See box Shoals Rodrigues, pages 204–5.

SMALL & MEDIUM ENTERPRISE AUTHORITY (SMEDA) SMEDA (smeda.mu) supports and facilitates the development of entrepreneurship in Mauritius and Rodrigues. It promotes the manufacture and sale of handicrafts and by buying goods from SMEDA outlets you ensure part of your payment goes to the Mauritian and Rodriguan artisans who made them. Handicrafts sold in other outlets, including the markets, are often imported. SMEDA craft shops can be found at:
