Mauritius - Safari

SAFARI ADVENTURES (Casela Nature and Leisure Park, Cascavelle; % 452 5546; f 452 5574; e safari-adventures[at]intnet.mu; safari-adventures-mauritius.com; ( 09.00–16.00 Mon–Sat) Located at the Casela Nature and Leisure Park, Safari Adventures Mauritius was established in 2006 by renowned wildlife experts Graeme and Julie Bristow from Zimbabwe. It offers the chance to interact with lions and/or cheetahs and/or tigers. All of the interactions are wonderful, memorable experiences, or if you don’t fancy getting too close you can simply observe the big cats from a platform or take a safari-style drive-through and watch them from a vehicle. The pick of the options has to be ‘walking with lions’. In a small group and accompanied by guides you take the lions for a walk around the reserve (no leads, they’re free, but far more obedient than my dogs). In recent years, the Bristows have also added the opportunity to walk with a lion and a tiger. It is an unforgettable experience and I’d recommend it to any animal lover. You’ll need comfortable walking shoes and ideally long trousers and mosquito repellent. Photographs and video are taken during the walk, which you can buy on DVD as a souvenir. Reservation recommended. There is a minimum height requirement of 1.5m for all interactions and walks, and a minimum age of 15. Approximate prices are 30-minute observation from a platform Rs100, 15-minute interaction Rs500, drive-through Rs250, walking with lions Rs2,500 per person, walking with a lion and tiger Rs3,000 per person. You will also need to pay the Casela Nature and Leisure Park entrance fee.

THE SEVEN COLOURED EARTHS (Mare Anguilles, Chamarel; % 622 6177; ( 07.00–17.00 daily; admission adult/childRs125/75) Signed from the village of Chamarel, a track through the private estate leads first to the waterfall then on to the coloured earths. Both attractions involve parking the car for a short walk. The track is lined with the Arabica coffee plants for which the area is known and ‘heart of palm salad trees’. The Chamarel Waterfall is the island’s highest and tumbles 100m down a sheer cliff face. The track continues to the second car park. A viewing platform allows you to see the denuded earth from on high. Specimens of the coloured earths in glass tubes are on sale in the small shop. There is also a snack bar.

RHUMERIE DE CHAMAREL (Royal Rd, Chamarel; % 483 7980; e infos[at] rhumeriedechamarel.com; rhumeriedechamarel.com; ( 10.00–17.00 Mon–Sat; admission & guided tour adult/child Rs350/175) On the main road through Chamarel, 3km from the village in the direction of Grand Bassin. The rhumerie was purpose built as an attraction in 2008. Admission includes a 30-minute guided tour explaining the process of producing rum from sugarcane, followed by a rum tasting. There is a shop selling rum and souvenirs, and an upmarket restaurant serving local produce (open for lunch).

TOUCHE DU BOIS (Coeur Bois; % 483 5710; e varangue[at]intnet.mu; varanguesurmorne.com; ( 11.00–15.00 daily; admission Rs100). This small but fascinating museum is on the site of the Varangue sur Morne restaurant and was created by the owner, a keen woodworker. It has been nicely put together and shows the various uses of wood, past and present, including in religion, sport, music and medicine.
