The harbour in St-Gilles and the town itself are full of bars, whilst most of the nightclubs and the casino are in L’Hermitage. The downside of nightclubbing in Réunion is that it will dent your wallet severely. In the St-Gilles-les-Bains area you can expect to pay in the region of €12–14 for entry and, on top of that, drinks are expensive. Some clubs are open only on weekends, some only on a Saturday night, but many also have a themed night on Wednesday. They tend to get going at around midnight and are open until about 05.00. Most play a mixture of music, but being St-Gilles there is less local music (séga, zouk, etc) than in St-Pierre, for example. Most clubs won’t let you in wearing trainers or flip-flops.

Bars are easily found on the main streets of St-Gilles and around the marina. Cubana Club (122 Rue du Général de Gaulle; % 0262 332491) is usually packed. There is a well-stocked bar, a brasserie, a cigar lounge and regular events. Wednesday night is jazz night, while Thursday is salsa night. Other popular spots on Rue du Général de Gaulle include Jungle Village (% 0262 332193), La Rhumerie (% 0262 245599), Chez Nous (% 0262 240808) and Mex (% 0262 330405). At L’Hermitage, the gay-friendly Hacienda Cocobeach (% 0262 338143) draws a crowd day and night.

As for nightclubs, Africa Queen (205 Rue du Général de Gaulle; % 0262 331615) has a tropical atmosphere and attracts a lively crowd of young, French partygoers. The ever-popular Moulin du Tango in L’Hermitage (9 Av des Mascareignes; % 0262 245390; ( Wed & Fri/Sat nights) is a large club, with open-air dance floors and several bars. Also in L’Hermitage is Le Loft (70 Av de Bourbon; % 0262 248106).

There is also the Casino de Saint-Gilles at L’Hermitage (% 0262 244700; ( 10.00–02.00 Mon–Thu, 10.00–04.00 Fri/Sat; slot machines ( from 10.00, the tables from 21.00).
