Mauritius - Things To Do

HIKING Piton Maïdo not only provides magnificent views of the cirque de Mafate; you can also hike into the cirque from here. It is a steep path and involves some clambering over rocks. Less challenging is a walk through Maïdo’s beautiful tamarin forest, where you can take advantage of the tremendously clear and fresh air.

WATERSPORTS All manner of watersports can be organised along the west coast. St-Leu and St-Gilles-les-Bains are the two main areas for scuba diving; St-Leu is where surfers head and St-Paul has a water-skiing centre. For details, see Chapter 16, Activities, pages 275–6.

GLASS-BOTTOM BOATS Glass-bottom boat trips depart from St-Gilles-les-Bains.

DOLPHIN-WATCHING CRUISES Cruises depart from St-Gilles-les-Bains. For details, see Chapter 16, Activities, page 277.

HORSERIDING Centre Equestre du Maïdo, on the way to Piton Maïdo, is a good-quality equestrian centre in a very picturesque area. There are also riding centres in St-Leu, Les Avirons and St-Gilles-les-Bains. For details, see Chapter 16, Activities, page 273.

GOLF Golf du Bassin Bleu at St-Gilles-les-Hauts and Golf Club du Bourbon at Etang-Salé are popular courses. For details, see Chapter 16, Activities, pages 273–4.
