The southern part of the island stretches from the town of St-Philippe in the southeast up to Le Tampon and from there down to Etang-Salé-les-Bains in the southwest.

The bustling coastal town of St-Pierre has deservedly earned the unofficial title of ‘capital of the south’ and is the gateway to the sud sauvage (the wild south), the name given to the rugged southeast coast. This is an area which lies in the shadow of Piton-de-la-Fournaise, with a coastline of black volcanic cliffs, the remains of lava flows stopped in their tracks by the sea. By contrast, there are some good white-sand beaches further west around St-Pierre and a large, black-sand beach at Etang-Salé-les-Bains.

The southern towns have plenty of charm and character, generally featuring small, neat Creole-style homes surrounded by colourful gardens. Creole gardens characteristically serve more than just a decorative purpose, containing flowers, medicinal plants, tropical fruit and vegetables intentionally bunched together in each flowerbed. There is a flourishing cottage industry in this region, including Creole furniture, lacework, honey, pâté and cheeses.
