The western region stretches from Les Avirons in the southwest, all the way up to La Possession. Inland, the scenic Route Hubert Delisle links several small settlements along the western ‘heights’ from Les Avirons to Bois de Nèfles in the north.

The west coast is Réunion’s sea, sun and sand holiday mecca, featuring 27km of beaches. It is the driest part of the island, so more often than not the weather is hot and sunny. Water temperatures generally average 20–26°C.

The coast around the historic town of St-Leu is known for its excellent surfing and black-sand beaches. There are also black-sand beaches at St-Paul but it is the clean, white-sand beaches at Boucan Canot, Roches Noires and L’Hermitage that draw the crowds.

Offshore, particularly around St-Gilles-les-Bains and St-Leu, there are colourful coral reefs, perfect for diving and snorkelling. St-Gilles-les-Bains is Réunion’s main tourist resort; it has been developed with tourists in mind and while visitors may enjoy the idea of a French seaside resort in a tropical setting, those seeking an authentic Réunionnais experience will not find it here. As you head north, the coast becomes more rugged and the area around Le Port is primarily industrial. While the west of the island is best known for its coastal resorts, those who head inland will be rewarded with attractive villages, incredible viewpoints and excellent hiking country. In particular, Piton Maïdo provides unforgettable views of the Cirque de Mafate.
