Temperature & What to Pack

Due to the sheer size of this country, Australia has multiple average temperatures and climates at all times of the year and therefore, what to pack will depend on where you intend to visit.

High in Australia’s tropical north, in destinations such as Katherine and Darwin, daily temperatures will rarely drop beneath 24C with slightly cooler evenings. This is the warmest destination to visit throughout Australia’s winter with a minimal chance of rainfall at an average of just 14mm.

Towards Australia’s central desert region containing Alice Springs and world-famous Ayers Rock (Uluru), the temperatures pick up slightly in August with average highs of 18C to 24C. However, with this drastic climate, temperatures can fall much lower of an evening so be sure to take a light jacket.

As for the southern region, containing the popular areas of Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide, temperatures are close to a pleasant British spring day, between 12C and 18C. When visiting these regions, layers and a light jacket are advised so you can adjust your comfort levels easily throughout the day (and put more on as the sun sets!).

If you are planning on visiting Perth on the western coast, you can expect daily temperatures of between 10C and 20C but expect rainfall too, as the average reading is 122.4mm. If visiting this region, we recommend layers and a light raincoat.

Should there be any ski enthusiasts in your party, August is the final month of ski season in Australia so you can head to the popular ski resorts in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, Victoria’s Alpine Region or the higher terrain areas of Tasmania’s national parks for some winter sports.

What to See

The Royal Queensland Show (or ‘Ekka’) – This fabulous event is the talking point of Brisbane throughout August, with crowds of 400,000 people per annum who gather to celebrate the very best of Australia’s farming tradition. With rides, live entertainment, good food and competitions, this event is certainly one to get involved in.

The Darwin Beer Can Regatta – This humorous and creative event sees enthusiastic locals of Darwin and surrounds create elaborate boats out of beer cans and bring their prize creations to the coast for a day of sailing and judging! Dates are often in late July and early August.

Melbourne International Film Festival – Taking pride as one of the oldest film festivals in the world and the most prominent in Australia, film-lovers should definitely travel to Melbourne for some red-carpet glamour in the month of August. From world-premiers to emerging talent, this exciting event ignites inspiration throughout Australia’s film industry.
