Temperature & What to Pack

The sheer size of this country results in multiple climates as you travel across the landscape. The northern regions receive tropical-like temperatures, whilst the central areas widely resemble desert environments with soaring temperatures and barren terrains.

The south-eastern region, home to Canberra, Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne has a much less extreme environment, perfect for city explorations. In this region, you can expect daily low temperatures of 16C with highs of up to 26C across 9 hours of sunshine. In December, Sydney has around 14 days of rainfall with an average reading of 85mm, whereas Adelaide has far lower averages with 9 days of rain and a reading of 20mm. If you are visiting the south-eastern cities throughout December, we would recommend packing summer clothes, swimsuits and perhaps an umbrella.

If you are heading to Ayers Rock and the town of Alice Springs, the weather is far hotter with high temperatures of 35C over 11 hours of sunshine, dropping to a pleasant 20C at night. Alice Springs receives around 9 days of rain throughout December with a reading of 30mm, making it slightly drier than the south-east. If visiting Australia’s desert region in December, we recommend summer clothes, sunhats and a light shawl for the evenings.

Towards the north of Australia, in the destinations of Katherine and Darwin, temperatures are consistently hot with lows of 27C, reaching up to 32C in the daytime. Although the temperatures are high with 8 hours of sunlight, this region encounters around 18 days of rain throughout December with a reading of 280mm in rainfall. However, watersports enthusiasts would be happy to know that the average sea temperature is a lovely 31C.

If you are travelling to the western city of Perth, you can expect some of the best weather Australia has to offer throughout December with daily highs of 27C during 12 hours of sunshine, dropping to a pleasant 16C at night. Perth sees just 4 days of rainfall in December with a minimal reading of just 10mm. If you are visiting during this time, shorts, t-shirts and swimwear are advised!
