Temperature & Packing

Due to Australia’s incredible size, there are multiple average temperatures across the country; ranging from snow-topped mountains to tropical climates. Although July is mid-winter in Australia, the experience you receive will vary drastically depending on your destination.

In the south, including the cities of Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, the temperatures are much cooler, ranging from 0C to 11C, whereas in the upper Northern Territory, tropical destinations such as Darwin receive average temperatures of around 20C to 30C.

Although Australia’s Red Centre has a desert-like atmosphere, in the month of July temperatures range from just 4C to 19C, making it an ideal time to visit for travelers who are uncomfortable in extreme heat.

In terms of rainfall, Perth is the wettest city throughout the month of July, with an average reading of around 7 inches. The second-wettest city during this month is Sydney, with a smaller measurement of 3.9 inches. For the best weather, consider the tropical city of Darwin; the driest city with an average of just 0.4 inches of rainfall throughout the month of July.

Should you be travelling in search of snow, July is mid-ski season in Australia, providing the perfect chance to hit the slopes whilst the European destinations shut for the summer. The Snowy Mountains, located in New South Wales are a popular ski destination, alongside Victoria’s Alpine regions. There is also the opportunity to partake in winter sports within the high-altitude areas of Tasmania’s national parks.

When packing for a holiday to Australia taking place in the month of July, ensure you pack plenty of layers to adjust your clothing as temperatures rise and fall throughout the day. We would also recommend taking a warm waterproof to keep you comfortable throughout your explorations. On the other hand, if you are visiting the tropical north, be sure to pack plenty of t-shirts and shorts with the occasional swimming costume.
