Temperature and Suggested Clothing

Although June is one of Australia’s winter months, the climate varies depending on which destination you travel to.

Australia has a tropical climate in the northern region, with an average ‘high’ temperature of 30C in the month of June with average ‘lows’ of 20C.

The bucket-list cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Cairns offer a mild average high of 16C upwards with an average low of around 10C. Visitors are advised to pack layers and a light jacket, so consider a mild British springtime when preparing for your holiday.

If the famous Uluru (Ayers Rock) formation is firmly at the top of your bucket-list, you can expect a day trip with a delightful temperature of around 20C in Australia’s desert region with cool lows of just 5C when the sun sets.

As an extreme variation, high within the snow-covered mountains of New South Wales, June marks the beginning of Australia’s ski season. This makes for a fantastic holiday choice for ski enthusiasts who feel confined by short-haul winter destinations.

When looking at Australia as a whole, the month of June is primarily dry with Perth having the largest risk of rainfall (but not at all comparing to the city’s ‘wet’ season). As a result, visits to Australia in June are a pleasant option for those who struggle with heat abroad.
