Temperature & What to Pack

The weather you can expect when visiting Australia will vary depending on which territory you visit. The southern cities, such as Sydney and Melbourne are much cooler, whereas the northern city of Darwin boasts a tropical climate almost all year round.

October is the second month of Australia’s springtime and temperatures in the tropical north range between 26C and 32C with 10 hours of sunshine. There are an average of 8 rainfall days in Darwin throughout October with an average reading of 60mm. If you are visiting this city, we would suggest taking swimwear, t-shirts and maybe an umbrella.

The southern cities of Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney have pleasant springtime temperatures of between 12C and 22C with around 9 hours of sunshine daily. Rainfall is much more likely at 13 days out of the month with 40mm anticipated in Adelaide and over 80mm expected in Sydney. When travelling within southern Australia in October, we would recommend jeans, t-shirts and a light jacket.

Within the Red Centre, the desert atmospheres bring a toasty average temperature of 30C in the daytime, dropping to around 15C of an evening. Sunshine hours are optimal at 11 hours a day with just 6 days or 20mm of rainfall predicted. Summer clothes are advised but we would suggest bringing a light jumper or a thick shawl for when the sun sets.

If visiting the western city of Perth is high on your to-do list, you can expect high temperatures of 21C with lows of 11C at night time. The sun shines for 10 hours a day in Perth during October and rainfall is less likely at 9 days a month, with an average recording of just 30mm.
