Manaus Opera House

The Manaus Opera House, often referred to as the Amazon Theatre, is a charming landmark in the middle of the Amazon Rainforest. This opera house is the venue for Amazonas Opera Festival, which takes place every year. It is also home to a number of choirs and orchestras. The Amazonas Philharmonic Orchestra can often be found practicing and rehearsing in Manaus.

This opera house certainly didn’t appear overnight. It took over 15 years to build due to several breaks that occurred because of funding issues. The extreme climate didn’t help with the building process either. Materials were brought in from all around Europe and a number of creative specialists were involved in the project. In true Renaissance style, Celestial Sacardim took care of the architecture.

The inside of the Manaus Opera House is just as spectacular as the outside with 198 sparkling chandeliers. There are also intricate paintings dotted around for further decoration – not to mention the 36,000 ceramic tiles that combine to form the Brazilian flag. It is truly a work of art and you can sense the effort that went into the whole creation.
